SOX lamps: Lighting-up data

This page contains tables of reference data, where they are too big to include in the main "Lighting-Up" and "Colour" pages. Please feel free to make use of my data - all I ask is that I am credited as being the source of it. It's taken a lot of work to put it together!

I have now put together a report that brings together, in detail, all the data that I have recorded on SOX streetlights between 1987 and 2009. This 160-page report contains in-depth analysis and many tables of data showing the characteristics of a large number of individual streetlights. Lighting-up data

Below are tables of data that show most of the sensitivity values recorded from 1987 to 2009. Part of this data was used to make the graphs/charts on the "Lighting-Up" page. For example, from table (a), streetlight "D" switched on around 11 minutes after sunset (on average) on each day in 1988. From the tables you can see that some streetlights do not change over time whereas some do. A value of "P" means the streetlight was permanently switched on (dayburning), whereas "X" means that the streetlight was not working (i.e. it never switched on).

Data is also shown amongst the tables below of how soon streetlights switch off in the morning, using a sample of data obtained from Gresford and Minera, (both in Wrexham), U.K. in the period 2002 - 2009. A positive number indicates how many minutes BEFORE sunrise a streetlight switched off, whereas a negative number indicates numbers of minutes AFTER sunrise. So, in 2005 for example, M8 would be the first light to switch off (NB: the value of 4 for 2002/3 is not a typo!), and M2 the last light to switch off.

I have less data for the morning than for the evening as I am not an early riser! These observations are easier to do during the autumn/winter when sunrise is later.

The units of measure in the tables are below are minutes after sunset (p.m.) or minutes before sunrise (a.m.). Only days of fine weather have been included - days of full cloud cover, rain etc. have been excluded.

Colour data

The tables below compare warm-up times for SOX streetlights over the last several years. Again, the data relates to the final colour of the streetlight and not the final brightness/light output. The lighter shades of blue show the streetlights that warm up more quickly. You can see that SOX lamps take less time to warm up now than they did years ago, and there is also a difference sometimes for high-wattage lamps.

All days of observations have been used for the tables of data below - whatever the weather. Please note that some of the data in the tables below has been corrected following the development of a new database.
